Droid Appreciation Week (very late) day 2: Favorite Relationship

basada-en-la-esperanza:

Based on a conversation about accents with @cassianandorjyn, and inspired by Finding Your Voice by @sleepykalena, I present to you: the K-2SO and Cassian Dream Team That Could Have Been.

Being that:

1. Accents are a piece of our identity. (As cassianandorjyn put it in their fic, heart as my compass; stars as my path, a man with an accent “carries his home with him.”)

2. The Empire is strongly associated with RP British accents.

3. Cassian freed K-2SO from serving the Empire and gave him free will.

4. K-2SO High Key hero worships Cassian,

then clearly, when he was reprogrammed, K-2 should have chosen a Mexican accent for himself, to sound like The Coolest Captain Of The Rebellion.

Which leads us to ask: who would then play K-2SO? We would need an actor who

1. is Mexican.

2. is good at many accents, because K-2 is supposed to be working with a spy so he should be good at fitting in in different places. (Also because in the inevitable prequel film, K-2 and Cassian: Before They Went Rogue, there will obviously be a scene during the reprogramming, in which K-2 tries out various accents – space!Chilean, space!Spanish, space!Argentine, etc – before choosing one that just happens to sound like his knight in shining armor.)

3. has a good rapport with Diego Luna.

I therefore humbly submit before you the retroactive fancasting of Cassian Andor and K-2SO:

Kay’s choice

atthelamppost:

A ficlet for Droid Appreciation week and the prompt: Free Will and Agency. Two pre-canon moments where Kay makes his choices known.

“I prefer to be assigned with Cassian.” Kay knew Cassian needed him and the current assignments were not good for him.

Draven sighed, it was one of those sounds that Kay disliked because the majority of the meanings were to do with disappointment. “You’re not. You’re assigned to the rescue mission. If you continue to be insubordinate, I’ll talk to Andor about reprogramming you.”

“Cassian would not do that, but I will go on the mission. It is what Cassian would tell me to do.” He understood that he could effectively go undercover on this rescue and this prisoner would be a useful asset. Draven nodded and waved him off in dismissal.

When Cassian returned, Kay noted that he was thinner with dark under his eyes from not sleeping well. As they walked towards Ops, Kay said. “The prisoner was uncooperative and this mission was not good for you. Draven has also threatened to have me reprogrammed again.”

Kay noted that Cassian attempted a smile as he rubbed his face, another sign of unrest and stress. “I won’t let him do that. No one is allowed to touch your programming without your permission.”

“I am accompanying you on this next mission.” Kay had decided this because Cassian was not functioning optimally. Cassian nodded in agreement which was the proper response.

In which Gael García Bernal finally gets to experience being taller than Diego Luna.

Droid Appreciation Week || Day 1: Free Will and Agency

I took the ficlet I made in this post and posted it on AO3 with some edits and some additional content to fit Droid Appreciation Week.

Special thanks to @boxofcharmingghosts for raising the initial question, and @ruby-red-inky-blue for providing a meta that sparked this ficlet.

“Cassian. My voice is acceptable as-is,” K2SO spoke in a low, gravely, warbled voice. Despite the obvious insistence, K2 sounded factual rather than persuasive.

Cassian didn’t look up from his datapad as he kept scrolling through different voice options. “I want to make sure people hear your voice and realize that you’re not actually part of the Empire anymore.” As he continued to filter through possible firmware options to install on K2′s system, he sighed- half out of boredom, half out of frustration. “All of these options are so…bare,” he muttered, shaking his head in disapproval.

“This voice is the bare minimum of accepted standards for communicating with Imperial officers,” K2 said. “There is no need to install new vocal firmware.”

“Wouldn’t you prefer to speak more like an organic sentient?”

“I am a droid,” K2 responded with the same level, robotic warble. “Speaking like an organic sentient carries no benefit.”
