Imagine hating black people and being so blinded by patriotism
Didnât some old bastard burn up his nikes while he was still wearing em and end up in the emergency room with third degree burns and bits of rubber grafted to his feet
This is the election that counts. Start educating yourself now on who will be campaigning to be your congresspeople/governor/etc.Â
Register to vote NOW. Donât wait. You can do it any time.
This is the fight we need to win. VOTEÂ
VOTEÂ
VOTE
AlsoâŠreminder to pay attention to all local elections and VOTE. These elected officials are the people most likely to directly impact your life in the short term.Â
This has to start now. Right now.
Get your birth certificates. There may be a fee or long wait times. Make sure you get a certified copy.
Make sure you have ID. Dig into your stateâs laws and the whole Real ID thing, because (and sorry I canât research this now, but pneumonia) I believe there are certain states whose driverâs licenses donât qualify for Real ID.
Make sure youâre registered to vote. Google it. Follow the instructions for your state.
Know where your local polling place is or find out if you can vote by mail.
Vote in ALL your upcoming elections. Yes, that means the little ones for city council or dog catcher or whatever. Vote those racist, homophobic, bigots out at every level.
Theyâre like weeds. You can pull up every visible bit, but if you leave one tiny segment of root, theyâll just come back.
To quote Mira Grant, rise up while you can. Because the Republicans are way the hell worse than zombies.
A year after the Tiki Torch Marches and Charlottesville is still wrestling with how their city is being perceived, but Iâve never thought that the Unite the Right rally defines Charlottesville.
It defines the United States.
Good White People were just shocked that so many of their skinfolk were in a big gathering saying out loud what the rest of us had heard in microaggressions, regular harassment, and political dogwhistles our entire lives.
It would be nice if I could close this little musing with âbut at least Good White People caught up quickly and are fighting the good fight with usâ but then I had to spend a whole year watching them fall all over themselves writing âweâre better than they areâ thinkpieces about not being mean to Nazis and stooping to their level.
The only thing that has changed between Charlottesville and today is that Good White Peopleâs polite complacency has allowed bigots cut from this same cloth to win Republican primaries all over the country. If they worried less about whether itâs okay to punch a Nazi in the face, we wouldnât be looking at an administration who wants to put a stop to legal immigration because Amerikkka has gotten too brown for them and they know Good White People will never be brazen enough to push back effectively.
I donât know what it would take to get all the Good White People off the couch and on the phones to their elected officials to walk out of every vote, to force an impeachment, to stand up to this administration in ways other than Forcefully Worded Tweets. A *white woman* died in Charlottesville and nothing happened. There should be no âclose racesâ in any congressional district â they should all be blowouts because Good White People should be running to the polls, but weâre still seeing abysmal turnouts on both sides of the aisle. I donât care how many racists and bigots stay at home â I care about the MAJORITY of Good White People who still are not voting in these Congressional races that weâve seen.
Y’all have until November to convince your like-minded skinfolk to go do something. The entire makeup of congress would change if every self-proclaimed Good White Person would actually vote, but y’allâs track record inspires zero confidence in me.
So, the United States will continue to be defined by the Unite the Right rally. Our marches may have larger numbers, but theirs galvanizes greater passion and political participation â which is why they are running the country.
